8 Healthy Habits for Gorgeous Looks

Eating Healthy

You know the saying, you are what you eat; well it can be true when it comes to your hair. Having plenty of protein, iron, and vitamin E in your diet is essential to providing the proper nutrition to your hair. Salmon, walnuts, spinach, greek yogurt, and blueberries are amongst many superfoods packed with nutrients that are awesome for healthier hair. Not only will you feel better by eating right, your hair will too!!

Wash less

Try going a day or two between washing your hair and it will thank you forever. Over washing your hair can strip natural oils from your hair that it needs to stay hydrated and healthy. I know some of you are thinking there is no way you can go one day, let alone two before washing your hair because it is so oily. This is common for people who tend to wash their hair daily. Your body is trying to over compensate for the loss of oils by shampooing daily by producing even more oils. If you feel the need to do something while you’re in the shower you can run conditioner throughout the ends of your hair. To help your hair on non-wash days try using Aveda’s Pure Abundance Hair Potion. This will add some volume and its mineral properties can also help absorb some of the natural oils at your scalp.

Invest in Boar Bristle Brush

Using a natural boar bristle brush can do wonders for your hair. The natural bristles are great for distributing oils from scalp to ends, and won’t rip or break your hair in the process. This type of brush will also smooth over the cuticle, the outer most layer of the hair, making the hair nice and soft and shiny. Try one of our Ibiza boar bristle brushes. Made in Spain, they are great for adding volume and shine, and are comfortable to hold with their natural cork handle.

Protect Against Heat

When using heat styling tools it is very important to make sure you are using the right products and taking the proper steps to protect your hair. You should always use a styling product that contains a heat protectant, like Aveda’s Brilliant Damage Control, and use tools that have an adjustable temperature, so you can control the amount of heat being applied every time. This will help protect your hair from having too high of heat being applied to often. Avoid heat styling every day and, when you have time, let your hair air dry before you flat iron or curl it, or just wear it natural. I promise with a great cut and the right products you will be able to do that!

Give Your Hair a Weekly Treatment

Using a treatment mask, in place of conditioner, once a week is great to help replenish your hair with moisture and/or protein. This will nourish your hair after heat styling or doing chemical services. It is a great way to keep your hair silky and smooth, keeping it healthy between salon visits. Our new Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment will give your hair a blast of moisture with natural buriti oil.

Less Tension

Tight hair styles can cause too much tension on the hair, which can lead to breakage if worn all of the time. Opt for looser hair styles when you’re wearing your hair back, like a cute and messy braid or bun, instead of the traditional tight style. Make sure to give your hair time to breath after wearing your hair up, don’t leave pulled back when you don’t have to.

Be Gentle With Wet Hair

First thing I do when I get out of the shower is wrap my hair up in a towel; little did I know it was damaging my hair! When your hair is wet is in a weaker state and is more prone to damage. Blot your hair dry with and squeeze out the extra moisture, never rub your hair with a towel.Using a wider tooth comb when hair is wet will help remove tangles without ripping or breaking the hair.

Don’t Skip Out on Haircuts

Many people don’t get their hair cut because its getting too long or out of shape, they’re growing it out, they got it cut last time; the list could go on and on. Getting your haircut regularly will reduce split ends, and keep your hair looking healthy. When you wait a long period of time between haircuts split ends can eventually lead to breakage higher up on the hair shaft. As a rule of thumb, you should trim your ends every 6-8 weeks, to keep your ends at bay and your hair looking fabulous!
